Preludes - Music and Paintings
A unique collaboration between pianist Graham Caskie, artist Brian Dunce and composer Stephen Goss, inspired by and based on Claude Debussy's twelve Piano Preludes, Book 1. The original concept was a commission by the Arts Council and the Guildford International Music Festival for Brian Dunce to paint twelve large- scale works, each a direct visual response to one of the Debussy Preludes.
Following a huge success at the Guildford Festival in March 2007, Goss was commissioned by Riverhouse Barn Gallery to write his own 'Preludes' in response to both Graham Caskie's performance of the Debussy Preludes and Brian Dunce's paintings.
The result is a ground-breaking recital programme in which the Debussy Preludes are played with Brian Dunce's imposing canvases installed around the church, so that the audience can appreciate paintings and music together. In addition Stephen Goss's reflections, some involving improvisation, are placed 'in amongst' the Debussy Preludes. Brian Dunce will introduce the evening.
