Romsey Bell-Ringers' Quarter Peal

Romsey Abbey
Romsey Abbey

A treat for the ears which can be heard all around Romsey! A quarter peal is the bell-ringing equivalent of running a 10 km race. On Romsey Abbey bells, it involves a team of eight ringers utilising physical and mental skills, ringing one bell each in a continuously changing order for approximately three quarters of an hour without stopping. The successful completion of a quarter peal is a significant achievement and they are rung to celebrate notable civic and religious occasions.

A full peal of 5040 changes, which is all the possible sequences of seven bells without repetition, has been achieved 107 times at Romsey Abbey since 1791 and takes over three hours to ring, the ringing equivalent of a marathon!
